two weeks ago, news broke that ABC canceled Wicked City after three episodes of the 1980s-set show about a pair of serial killers. In it, Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) and Erika Christensen murder while LAPD detectives (Jeremy Sisto and Gabriel Luna) hunt them down. The premise and period setting sounded intriguing, but reviews were bad. and ratings were worse, setting what “is believed to be a big 4 low for a scripted original.” (They shouldn’t have canceled Forever, which wasn’t anything special but made it at least a season in the same time slot, Tuesday at 10 PM Eastern. I liked enjoying Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) as an immortal medical examiner in NYC.)

Wicked City was the first show canceled from the fall TV season, which began two months earlier. From the link:

The broadcast networks have been remarkably individual this fall, trimming orders for underperforming new series but keeping them on the air until their episodes run out. The list has included ABC’s Blood & Oil, NBC’s The player and truth Be Told, and Fox’s Minority Report.

In past years, it hasn’t taken that long. Usually, it’s October or even September. Here’s a fun list of the first shows to get cut for the last 15 years.

So now, shows don’t get canceled; they jut don’t get extended. Those four had their runs cut short, with orders cut back from 13 to 9 or 10 episodes. theories as to why include:

With a lot more people binging shows or enjoying in time-delayed fashion (DVR or online), shows need a lot more time to develop an audience. Plus, there are so lots of other choices, people may not discover a show ideal away. Networks are cautious about drawing conclusions too quickly.

With costs sunk into shows, you might as well leave them on the air without giving them the “kiss of death” of announcing a cancellation. Networks now minimize risk by ordering a first set of 8 or 13 episodes instead of a full season.

Networks don’t have anything a lot more successful to replace bad shows with. Anything’s considered better than running a repeat. and something new might do even worse.

There are fewer successes, so shows can muddle along longer without seeming like total failures.

More networks have ownership stakes in their shows, so there’s a lot more incentive to make something a success — or at least keep it around long enough to be able to sell it for streaming.

In this particular case, it may have been a bad match — Wicked City might have been better able to fully explore the premise on a cord or pay network. promising sex and violence on ABC, even at 10:00, doesn’t seem plausible.

Here’s one way to be sure that your digital comic program gets attention: give them away. In large numbers.

During the four days of the San Diego Comic-Con, Dark horse will give one person $500 of digital comic credit at 10 AM each day in a raffle.

Dark horse digital launched at the end of April earlier this year. (Originally planned for January with issues at $1.49, the release was delayed and repriced.) once a user creates an account, they can read comics in any web browser or via an iPad/iPhone app. (The iPad seems to be their preferred method.) They’ve been promising an Android application since launch, but it hasn’t appeared yet.

There are currently 32 free offerings, representing some of Dark Horse’s best-known titles, including Hellboy, The Terminator, and The Umbrella Academy. The store also includes manga, with Lone Wolf and Cub and Bride of the Water God. Dark Horse’s strength is their discounted bundles, making it easy to buy the equivalent of trade paperback collections for miniseries. most issues are $1.99, with four- or five-issue bundles (or graphic novels) at $5.99. They have a new Releases section, or a weekly newsletter that notifies users of what’s been added. Dark horse is also unique in offering exclusives through comic stores, although participation is not widespread.

Like most other online comic stores, you don’t own what you buy; you only rent (license) the issues, and they could be removed at any time. You also have to be connected to read the comics; they’re not downloadable. Plus, some of them omit some of the print content. likely due to licensing issues, some Dark horse publications (most obviously the star Wars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics) aren’t yet available.

Em has had lots of popular beefs–too lots of write about here–but one of his earliest was against Canibus. The two had a misunderstanding, because Em was suspected to have been the writer for LL amazing J of “The Ripper Strikes Back,” which dissed Canibus. Em has never admitted writing it, and amazing J claims he wrote it himself, but relations between Bus and Em started getting worse. So, on Sway & Tech’s “This Or That” album, Em slipped in a line against Bus. It wasn’t even a terrific line–he just suggested that someone switch their demo with Canibus’ if they want to get ahead, suggesting that Bus was making his fame on his name and not on his skill. Bus attacked Em a few times, but none of them are even worth hearing. but Em’s actions are brilliant.

Marshall has also fueded with far a lot more popular folks than ‘Bus, who never really broke big. There was this toss-off, for example, against a person who was substantial for about a year:

3. Are You terrified (Mystikal diss)-Eminem. “I’m strong enough to beat your ass with a feather pillow!” he says, before threating to rip Mystikal’s voicebox out. This seemed kinda gratuitous, but a young Marshall was hungry for fame so he took the attack everyone route. seems to have worked.

And remember his classic battle with Whitey Ford? I’m actually a fan of Everlast (not a substantial fan, but I appreciate the dude). but I gotta say, Em killed him.

5. everyone knows about the popular line about Christina Aguilera from “The real Slim Shady.” (I’m not gonna throw it up here–y’all need to have heard it.) He did it live at MTV, with XTina in the audience (best reaction shot from a live show ever!). but not a lot of folks know that she tried to respond by creating her own diss records. and they’re actually pretty funny. wonder who wrote them for her?

Slim’s greatest battles are against other rappers, though, not blues singers like Whitey or pop stars like Christina. In 2003, Eminem’s battle with Benzino marked his greatest diss lyrics ever. Zino is the editor of The source (or was), which gave his genius album “The Marshall Mathers LP” only 2 mics. So Em came back on his The Eminem show album with “Say What You Say.” but it was the mixtape verses that really killed any street cred Benzino might ever have had.

Pull Ya Skirt Up-Benzino. What’s so funny about this is that Ben spends the whole time talking about Eminem was never a gangbanger or drug dealer, but Em never claimed to be! So Em didn’t even want street cred.

Most of Em’s retaliations are well known (Nail in the Coffin is the best), but here’s one he just tossed off in a Freestyle, proving that Em can complimentary associated better than Zino can ever write.

During the ‘Zino battle, Marshall dragged Jah policy into it, the shoutingest gravel rapper considering that Mystikal. Here’s a couple tracks, along with Jah’s sexiest picture ever. He nearly looks like a girl!

And I’d like to leave you with the tape released by Benzino of Eminem being “racist.” I don’t think he’s particularly racially offensive here, he’s just not funny. Number 10, then, may be Em’s worst diss ever.
