Superman The man of Steel

If you’ve been anywhere near me in the past week or so, you’ve probably heard me singing the praises of the book and Here’s the Kicker by Mike Sacks. In the book, Sacks interviews 21 humor writers including such people as Stephen merchant (The Office), Dave Barry, Al Jaffee, and Harold Ramis. It’s fascinating reading.

In reading the interviews, I’ve found two things that are repeated fairly often. First, you can’t learn to be funny. You can learn to write a script, a story, or a comic, but you’re either funny or you aren’t. Second, there has to be something for the audience to associate with. This can be done by giving a character human elements that people can recognize or putting characters into a situation people understand. If they have something to hold onto, an audience will let you get away with a lot of anything. people accept that the three Stooges can knock the snot out of each other and not get hurt because they understand the anger, frustration, and hope for better things that are a part of numerous of their shorts. The geek community – myself included – has embraced big Bang theory because they can see themselves and people they know in Sheldon, Leonard, and the others. Yes, in both cases it’s typically taken to extremes, but it’s rooted in something real.

So, what does this have to make with comics? A lot actually. like comedy, I think you need to have something for the audience to latch onto to make a superhero work.

Take Superman for example. He’s an alien. He can fly. He’s amazingly strong and has a repertoire of fantastic powers. If that’s all there was to him, he might be interesting to read about for a while, but it’d get boring after a while because people can’t associate with any of that. At least not anybody I’ve ever met. However, he also has the Clark Kent part of his personality. He’s in love with Lois. He’s friends with Jimmy. He has problems at work. These are things we can understand. once there’s that human attachment, he can do all sorts of fantastic things and that’s fine because we get where he’s coming from.

Essential Spider-Man

Bringing the human to the superhero was nowhere better exemplified than in the building of the marvel universe by creators like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko. and it all started with the fantastic Four, a group who were a family first and superheroes second. Is it any wonder that when I first started reading comics back in 6th or 7th grade that my favorite superhero was a nerdy kid who had problems with school and girls? but when he’d bust out as Spider-Man, it was the utmost in wish fulfillment to enjoy him battling Doc Ock or the Vulture. Sure, I knew it wasn’t possible to do all those fantastic things in real life, but associating with Peter Parker made it seem like they could.

Heck, you can even associate with a non-human protagonist and believe they’re real if you give them recognizable traits. That’s one of the reasons that Carl Barks’ Uncle Scrooge comics are still read and loved today.

This humanity is why a number of the classic superheroes – like Superman, Batman, the fantastic Four, Iron Man, Hulk, and Spider-Man to name but a few – are still around today. I in some cases wonder if forgetting this human element is what causes some new heroes, or re-launches of old characters, to not make much of an impact. While society may change – whether you’re in the 1950s, 1980s or 2000s – what it indicates to be human remains pretty constant. and as long as our heroes continue to tap into that core, they will survive to battle all sorts of fantastic menaces and entertain readers for years to come.

At least that’s what I think. What’s your opinion?
